Everything HR - by PHRS Guam

Last week, I was a presenter at one of the local high school's  Career Day.  My topic was Human Resources.  Rather than speak on "Why I became a HR professional" or "What is HR?", I decided to ask the students to participate in my presentation.  I simply asked each of them 2 questions   - what are their strengths and what are their weaknesses.  By asking them to describe their strengths and weaknesses, I had hoped to help them discover the types of careers they might enjoy in the future, and to help them prepare for a job interview.  I would say, 95% of the students could not or would not describe their strengths and weaknesses.  So why was I not very surprised by this low response.  In recent months, I have asked these same two questions of adults seeking jobs.  I am surprised at the number of adults who tumbled over these questions - and these are adults who have held jobs.  You would think these were easy questions but for many, these are very difficult questions.

Suggestion on interviewing well:
When the recruiter says "Tell me about yourself." - be prepared to describe yourself.  And this means you need to know your strengths (list 10) and your weakness (list 1).  Why 10 strengths and one weakness?  10 because you will remember only about 2-4 strengths, and 1 weakness because you need to remember how to turn a weakness into a strength.
